who we are

explore.ie is Ireland's premiere travel writing, photography and advice resource.

Created by travel writers and photographers and aimed at travellers coming to or from Ireland, explore.ie is designed to be used in many ways. It has the writing and photographs of a discerning travel magazine, the brass tacks of a quality guide book and the interactivity of the web, all in one.

Whether beginning your research, adding the finishing touches or dreaming from your desktop, you won’t find prescribed itineraries here. What you will find are honest and lively contributions from award-winning writers and photographers, and plenty of personality.

One more thing. We are great believers in holidays and stress relief. But there is more to travel than that. Participation, sustainability, fresh perspective and getting to know the society and people one is visiting are foremost in our minds. We're an online resource, but we know the passage between continents is more than a mouse click. It is thousands of miles, hundreds of cultures, a window into another way of living. It is a look at the fact that despite our beliefs, colours and experiences, from a mosquito’s viewpoint we’re just the same.

Golden Spider Awards 2005 - Best Newcomer Nomineeexplore.ie is updated monthly with six new features and slide shows.

explore.ie undertook an upgrade in 2005 that was designed by Greville Edwards and partially funded by the Wicklow County Enterprise Board.

explore.ie was shortlisted for a Golden Spider 2005 Internet Award in the Best Newcomer category.

where we’re going

explore.ie is online since January 2005. As the site grows, interactivity will become a key value. Photographs, features, brass tacks and archives will be joined by dynamic elements such as blogs, online polls, advice and ultimately audio/video reports and features.

The pace of development will be governed by browser feedback, business factors and the rate at which broadband is rolled out in Ireland and globally. But it is hoped that, in the near future, a culture of interactivity will come to define the site and make it of utmost use to travellers.

If you’re interested in getting involved in this process as an advertiser, contributor, business partner, editor or sponsor, please review our opportunities page.

ethics of explore

Ads: From the beginning, we set out to provide quality travel coverage without the distraction of ‘dancing baloney’. Advertisements on explore.ie will be confined to formats we think give sponsors the best opportunities and targeted visibility, whilst freeing browsers from the harassment of pop-ups and other clutter. Potential advertisers and sponsors should visit our opportunities page.

Contributors: Explore writers and photographers are the pick of the crop. Their material is strictly vetted and read for its editorial independence, integrity, accuracy, usefulness and personality. Contributors' opinions are not necessarily the opinions of explore.ie or its directors. If you take issue with any of the writing, photographs or sentiment on our site, please make use of the forums or 'contact us' facilities.

Cookies: explore.ie currently does not use cookies. In future we may use cookies to help us personalise content, analyse traffic flow and recall queries in our 'search' functionality. Cookies are data stored in text file format on your computer hard drive. By modifying your browser preferences, you can instruct your browser to accept or reject all cookies, or be notified when one is set. You may also delete any cookies set while browsing the 'Internet Options' menu in IE.

Editorial: explore.ie relies on values of quality, originality, independence, reliability and discernment. We can't claim to be watertight, however. Things change. Bars close, routes open. If you spot factual errors or something you think we should know about, please let us know.

Links: Editorial content is in no way influenced by links to and from the site. Where links to tour operators, airlines, hotels etc. are provided in 'brass tacks' panels, they are as a result of research and consideration, not of paid advertising. Sponsored links are very clearly highlighted as such. You are welcome to provide a link to explore.ie from your site, although we would prefer you did so to the home page only and let us know by email.

Press Trips: Ideally, we would all travel on our own budget. explore.ie is not The New York Times, however. Many, but by no means all, of the trips that result in articles on explore.ie are sponsored at least in part by airlines, tourist boards or the travel industry. This currently is an economic necessity from our perspective, but in no way biases editorial integrity or objectivity.

Privacy: Like the vast majority of web sites, explore.ie keeps track of basic information such as visitors' domain names, referral data and browser type to add to analyses of site traffic and functionality. Rest assured, however: we have no access to personally identifiable information anyone could use to contact you and will not share e-mail addresses or other information from correspondence or other methods unless given express permission to do so.
